I am trying to file an amended 2023 federal return electronically. The original has been filed and accepted. Why does TurboTax include the original return with the 1040X? Does the original need to be filed again?

Part of the Amendment process is to create the 1040X, and also include the original 1040 with the amended return.

Did you already receive your refund from your original filing? If not, you should wait until you do before submitting an amendment.

An amended return does not 'catch up' with the original return and correct it. It's processed completely separately and can take several weeks to complete.
