I’m trying to file my 2022 tax return but it keeps getting rejected

Did you use 2022 software to prepare the return? The online software is only for 2024 returns--you cannot use online for a 2022 return.

A 2022 return cannot be e-filed. E-filing has been permanently closed for 2022 returns since October of 2023. The only way to file the 2022 return is by mail. Print it, sign and date it in ink and mail it.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

You cannot change the tax year. The current online program is for 2024 only. Only a 2024 return can be prepared online and only a 2024 return can be e-filed.

Online preparation and e-filing for 2021, 2022, and 2023 is permanently closed.

Note: The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac. It cannot be used on a mobile device.

To file a return for a prior tax year

If you need to prepare a return for 2021, 2022, or 2023 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)

You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.

Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

If you are amending your tax return for the tax year 2022, you will need to print and mail your amended return. Follow these instructions to amend a prior-year return.

As xmasbaby0 mentions above, you have to use the TurboTax software that is for 2022 to amend your 2022 tax return.

You can use this IRS tool to determine if you should amend your tax return, click here and select "Begin" to enter your information. It will ask you questions about your issue.

Three weeks after mailing your amendment, you can start tracking it at Where's My Amended Return? on IRS.gov.

Some things to keep in mind:

Amend only if you need to make a change to a return you have already filed.
Have a copy of your original return at your side before you start. And be sure you use the correct year’s software of TurboTax.
You must file a separate Form 1040-X for each tax return you are amending.
Amended returns can take more than three months for the IRS to process.
Gather your original tax return and any new documents needed to prepare your amended return.
Print a copy of your return that you are amending and have it ready to refer to.
Use the same TurboTax account you used to file your original return.
Be sure to only make changes to the areas of your return that need amending.
