Forgot to add estimate tax i submitted for 2021 while filing federal return

Hi:

I forgot to add federal estimated tax that i paid for 2021 while filing return. I have 2 questions:
1. Do i need to submit an amended return for federal (only)?
2. I went ahead and started using the "amend" option in turbo tax. In the "review" sections it says "we don't detect any difference between your original 2021 return and your amended return...". In "explanation of changes" i wrote "I paid estimated tax of $4000 on 02/28/2022 for the year 2021, but forgot to enter it while filing my federal tax 2021."

Please advice.

Thanks.

The IRS should have your estimated taxes in their database so will add the amount that you paid in estimated taxes in 2021 to your filed tax return.

On the amended return, you can the cancel return by clicking Cancel Amend on the left side of the online program screen.

Or if you are using the desktop editions see this TurboTax support FAQ for removing the amended return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/amending/help/how-do-i-cancel-or-undo-an-amended-return-in-the-turbotax-cd-download-software/00/26316

You should not start an amended return until you have received the federal tax refund or the taxes owed have been paid and the payment processed by the IRS.

If for some reason the IRS does not adjust your tax return for the estimated tax payments then you can amend the return and add the estimated taxes.

To enter, edit or delete estimated taxes paid (Federal, State, Local) -

    • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
    • Click on Deductions and Credits
    • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
    • Scroll down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid
    • On Estimates, click on the start or update button

Or enter estimates paid in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to estimates paid

Federal estimated taxes paid are entered on Form 1040 Line 26

if it was indicated that the 2/22 payment was an estimated tax payment for 2021 (the 4th quarter was due 1/17/22) the IRS should catch it and adjust accordingly. do not amend until you see what the IRS does.

all this depends on how you paid and what you indicated the payment was for.

    Thanks for your response.

I paid the estimated tax online through EFTPS and these are the info i provided:

Tax Form: 1040 US Individual Income Tax Return

    Tax Type: Estimated 1040ES

Tax Period: 2021 (i should have mentioned 2022 here)

    Payment Date: 02/28/2022

How long usually does it take for the IRS to respond back?

    Thanks again.

They may have applied it to the first quarter estimated payment for 2022 since it was after 1/17/2022.
