Question

Forgot to put a major item on taxes (paid estimated and didn't put in) - how do I now?

When I filed for an extension I paid estimated federal and state taxes. When I came back to Turbo Tax last month to finish I do not think I put down anywhere the tax I had paid. 2 questions:

What do I do to get that recorded and where on the form would those amounts go?

Thanks for any help with this.

I have looked through my return and do not see it in there although could have easily missed it - in the event TT automatically included it....  doubt that though. THANKS.

Did you already file without it?  The IRS should find that and add it in for you to reduce a tax due or increase your refund.

If your extension payment did not automatically show up on 1040 Schedule 5 line 71 which goes to 1040 line 17 you need to enter it.  So make sure it's not already there before you enter it!

You can type estimates paid in the search box at the top of your return and click Find and it will give you a link to Jump To the screen where you enter Extension Payments.

To enter the amount you paid with an extension (including state extension)  go to

Federal Taxes (or Personal for desktop H&B version)

    Deductions and Credits

Then scroll way down to Estimates and Other Taxes Paid

Other Income Taxes - Click the Start or Update button

Next page second section Payments with Extension

Either Visit All or Click Start or Update by the extension you paid

Thanks so much. As I have already submitted the Returns will I need to do an amended return if the amounts have not been accounted for?

I thought it possible that the IRS might adjust it themselves but not sure.

    cheers.

If the return was filed and accepted for processing then do nothing...wait and see if the IRS catches the error...they usually do.
