Form 1040 2a

While the sidebox on Turbotax says  "this issue has been resolved" that is not true.  Line 2a on my1040 asks for tax-exempt interest but no matter what number I enter in the Turbotax box answering their ambiguous question, line 2a remains blank.  Also not one of the 6 "tax experts" seems to know what number to put in the box about  tax-exempt dividend interest.  And while the sidebar info says Turbotax will help you figure out what to do, that is not the case.  No page where you can enter the total number of a tax exempt fund multiplied by the proper percentage that is tax free of the amount.  My clock on top of the Turbotax page is at over 10 hours!

I had no problems last year.

You don’t calculate a number for 2a.  It comes from a 1099 Div box 12.  If you don’t have any you can leave it blank.  Is it for state?

For state tax exempt dividends……

There should be extra pages with your 1099 from the broker or fund listing them.  Or you need to get the statements online from the company.

Some brokers are not including the backup detail sheets and tables now and you have to go online to get them.  Like I have Vanguard and I'm in California.

I have done the calculations using info from Fidelity.  Fidelity never marks anything in Div. Box 12.  When I enter the final calculated number that I have done myself (because Turbotax is not helping calculate that number), that number does not transfer to line 2a on the 1040.
