Line 1 on your form 1040-X is where your income is reported. If there was a change in your income reported on your amended return, you need to explain what happened.

In response to the IRS notice, draft an explanation of what makes up the change in income as reported in column B, line 1 of form 1040-X.

ThomasM125, thanks for the response. The confusion for me is there is no entry on Line 1 of my 1040X. So, when they are asking me to explain it. It makes no sense to me.

It depends.

Other options:

  • You could respond to the notice explaining that there was no change to line 1, and provide a general explanation to what did change, prompting the amendment.
  • You can call the IRS from the number written on your notice and ask for further clarification
  • Review your submission to confirm that adequate details were included. If the changes were not adequately reported, file a new amendment.

I would expect you to start with something in line 1, even if there were no changes. Line 1 is Adjusted Gross Income. Without any adjusted gross income, you would not have needed to file a return in the first place. It is important to not make any changes until after you trigger the Amendment. If you changed your tax return before, you need to follow the steps outlined here: How do I amend my return?

Otherwise, if you make the changes before triggering Form 1040X, TurboTax does not have the original filing accurately preserved to report in Column A. There will be no change to report in Column B if the original is already the updated status.
