Please be advised that Turbo Tax has no intention of ever releasing this freaking form on time...EVER. It's been three delays this year and at least 17 days the last two years. I swear they have Steve Wonder programming from a treadmill while a person with poor English reads the requirements. Here's a simple statement to help you guys:

Case when taxyear in (2020,2021,2022) then 'do the same thing as prior' else 'do nothing else' end as form8915

Seems to be true about the delays, however I feel that the blame rests on the IRS. I was given a 2/23/23 date for the 8915F-T form, then on 2/23/23 I received a notice of 3/2/23. Today I see it has been pushed out to 3/9/23. This smells like big government in 100% fashion. It's amazing that the IRS/federal government has all year to hash things out, but always finds a way to disappoint.

Yeah, I am in same boat (along with many others, I am sure). Today is 3/8. If I logon to TurboTax tomorrow and that 3/9/23 date changes and gets pushed back again, I am going to freak.

March 9, 2023

Yeah!  As of midnight tonight the form is up!   I successfully e-filed my return.

Please ensure the software is up to date by following the instructions here

Please let us know if the issue is still ongoing after the update. @TravisTractor

CarissaM,

I am not having issues getting the TT program to update, it updates when I ask it to. I am waiting on form 8915F-T to become available so I can file. Unless you know something I don’t??? If you know it’s available then tell TT to make it available to me when I update please.

Once a form is approved by the IRS, we must then incorporate that form into the software.  This takes some time.  There are instances when the projected availability date gets pushed back to ensure we've accurately incorporated the form into the TurboTax software.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.  As of today, Form 8915-F (for taxpayer and spouse) is scheduled to be available on 03/09/2023.  @GDAWGG

Should be able to bypass K3 form and efile by going to your K-1 and removing the checkmark in Box 16.

March 8, 2023

That is correct.  If you do not need to report K-3 income then you do not check box 16.  However, if you file your return and receive a K-3 for foreign income at a later date you will need to amend the return.  To amend your return in TurboTax you can follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax
  2. On the home screen, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and select the year you want to amend
  3. Select Amend (change) return, then Amend using TurboTax Online
    • If you're told to amend your return via TurboTax Desktop, follow the steps for TurboTax CD/Download below instead
  4. On the screen OK, let's get a kickstart on your amended return, select the reason(s) you're amending and Continue
  5. When you reach Here's the info for your amended federal return, select Start next to the info you need to change
  6. Continue through the screens, make the changes you need to make, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return

For more information on amending returns, see the link below:

So, here is the deal. My Federal return was rejected because TurboTax messed up the coronavirus related code on form 8915-F, line C. I contacted help and a very nice rep (Thanks Tammy!) told me that ALL her calls this morning have been about this one form. According to Tammy, TurboTax is aware of the broken form and is working to fix it. They will send out an email when its fixed and I can re-file. No Timeline for the fix was given.

March 10, 2023

From various posts, the software users appear to have found a workaround by manually editing the form.  On-line users who started their return after 8915f was officially available do not seem to have the issue.  I believe I found a way to solve the issue for users that already started/finished their return but were waiting on 8915f, and do not want to start over.  Go to tax tools and delete the forms associated with the Qualified Disaster Withdrawals.  You will then need to re-enter that you took the 2020 withdrawal and enter the amounts (deleting eliminates the information that TurboTax carries over from prior returns).  I cannot confirm yet that the IRS accepted the e-file, but when I reviewed the finished 8915f form, it was properly filled out; nothing in C and box in D checked.

March 10, 2023

After getting my return rejected twice, I followed your directions by deleting the 8915 forms, refilled out the info & successfully resubmitted my tax return. Thank you so much!!

March 10, 2023

Do not file 8915-F yet! Your return will be rejected. Turbo tax has some bug that is putting the word coronavirus on line C of the form when box D should be checked and line c should be blank. Tried to fix it manually and could not. $160 for turbo tax to file my taxes yeah ok, I know the issue but can’t fix it. $160 to do my taxes wrong.

March 10, 2023

did they give you any info on fixing it? they told me to

file by mail....

March 10, 2023

That’s what I was told also,

March 10, 2023

you know what's great.... the form is now available and i filled it out correctly and was on the phone with a rep

for 45 min and no one can find an issue yet i keep getting rejected due to this form when i file. so they're telling me to file by mail. literally the worst process every year

March 10, 2023

I fixed it. Go to tools, delete files, delete the 8915 and qualified distribution form. Go back to retirement area. Answer all the questions again. Review the file before submitting, it should be fixed at that point. Mine was just accepted. Definitely requesting a refund from TT.

March 10, 2023

you're a hero i did this and it worked. they should refund you !!!

March 10, 2023

Did you have any issues with federal taxes being rejected? It sure looks like I did everything correctly and did not have issues last year and it got rejected this year.

March 10, 2023

I got the Federal form 8915F to report properly and it should have carried over to my Iowa state form 1040, but it didn't.  Now I can't get the amount in my Iowa form to report it as income.  I turn 55 this year so the retirement amount is excluded on another line, but I can't put that in either.  Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

March 11, 2023

I can confirm this worked for me!

March 11, 2023

Turbo Tax has now received the 8915-F forms, but the IRS has now rejected my federal return 4 times in two days. The change from 8915-E to F now has a box C and box D. If you are in year 3 of a coronavirus distribution, as I am, you will need to check box D. However, when doing this, you must also leave box C blank...but you cannot do that on Turbo Tax...it auto populates the word coronavirus, causing a conflict error on the IRS' side when receiving it.

I phoned for help tonight and had a Turbo Tax rep literally delete my 8915-F form in an attempt to circumvent the system...another futile attempt, and to boot, I now cannot find my 8915-F form anywhere...really has to be a better way.

March 11, 2023

This is what I used to fix my Federal.  State doesn't populate and you can't override it.

Please try these steps to fix the rejection issue:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click on the "Search" on the top and type “1099-R”
  3. Click on “Jump to 1099-R”
  4. If you do not have any 2022 1099-R answer "No" to "Did you get a 1099-R in 2022?" (If you have any other 1099-R then enter all 1099-R and after entering your last 1099-R click "Continue" on the “Review your 1099-R info” screen)
  5. Answer "Yes" to the "Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2022?" screen
  6. Answer "Yes" to "Did you take a 2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution?"
  7. Uncheck the box next to "If this was a Coronavirus-related distribution reported in 2020 check here" and click continue
  8. On the "Which disaster affected you in 2020?" screen I selected the blank entry and click "back
  9. Then recheck the box next to "If this was a Coronavirus-related distribution reported in 2020 check here" and continue.

Another option is to delete "Form 8915-F" and "Qualified 2020 Disaster Retirement Distr" and then go back to the retirement section and reenter the information:

  1. Open or continue your return in TurboTax.
  2. In the left menu, select "Tax Tools" and then "Tools".
  3. In the pop-up window Tool Center, select "Delete a form".
  4. Select "Delete" next to "Form 8915-F" and "Qualified 2020 Disaster Retirement Distr" and follow the instructions.
  5. Click on the "Search" on the top and type “1099-R”
  6. Click on “Jump to 1099-R”
  7. If you do not have any 2022 1099-R answer "No" to "Did you get a 1099-R in 2022?" (If you have any other 1099-R then enter all 1099-R and after entering your last 1099-R click "Continue" on the “Review your 1099-R info” screen)
  8. Answer "Yes" to the "Have you ever taken a disaster distribution before 2022?" screen
  9. Answer "Yes" to "Did you take a 2020 Qualified Disaster Distribution?"
  10. Check the box next to "If this was a Coronavirus-related distribution reported in 2020 check here" and enter your information.
