Got a letter from IRS that said incorrectly claimed the AOTC more than 4 tax years.

I tried to amend 2023 and change it to the Lifetime Learning Credit, but I keep getting "Good News! You Qualified for the American Opportunity credit.  How do I amend this return?

Be sure you tell the program that you had AOC for 4 years.

Somewhere in the interview questions that led to the AOTC there was a question that asked you how many times you have received that credit (or the Hope Credit).    You can only get the credit for a total of four times, including times it may have been used by parents who claimed you as a dependent.
