My hard drive fried and cannot retrieve my tax files from previous years.  Does TurboTax keep a file?

Did you use the Desktop installed program?  You didn't make any backups?   If you used the Desktop CD/Download program then the only copy is on your computer and not saved or stored online.

You can also request a transcript from the IRS

If you used desktop software downloaded/installed from a CD to your own computer, then the tax files are stored locally on your own hard drive or any backup device you used like a flash drive.  They are not stored online.  If you cannot recover them due to a hard drive failure, etc. you can get a free transcript from the IRS or for a fee of $43, an actual copy of your tax return.

if you used desktop and did not keep offline copies, you can get transcripts from the IRS for the last 6 years or copies of the returns for the same period - $43 each. as for state, the IRS does not have copies so if you need those you would have to check with your state income tax bureau.
