First you must consult your online account at IRS to see if your original return was recorded.

If not, you cannot amend because there is nothing for the IRS to compare against.

You did not mention the tax year.

did you paper file or efile? did you check your transcript or the WMR tool on the IRS website?

the IRS is VERY slow this year processing returns due to COVID. it's not as bad as it was back in June, but still a problem

the IRS website states that they have completed processing ALL returns that are error free through March... and this is NOVEMBER.  So if you paper filed after March, it is still sitting in a box waiting on processing (and you can't see anything on the WMR tool).  if you e-filed, that means there is an issue / error - look at the transcript

DO NOT REFILE - per IRS

and you can not 'amend' until the original return is filed - and it'll just make things worse if the original return gets processed and then the amended return gets processed - you'll be working through this until 2025!!! DO NOT REFILE AND DO NOT AMEND.
