Question

Hi, I already submitted my return and stated on it that I did not receive my second stimulus check, but have now received it in the mail. What should I do?

Well  now   you WAIT and PRAY that the IRS rejects this return you just filed in error.

If they DO  reject the return you can make the needed corrections and refile using the 2020 return.

If they do NOT reject the return then you must wait even longer.  As they process the return they will most likely catch the error and correct the bottom line.

If they DON'T  reject the return and actually process the return  you filed  THEN you will have the option to amend the return once you get the original refund.

Hot off the presses  ... processing of 2020 returns will not start until 2/12/21 ...   https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/2021-tax-filing-season-begins-feb-12-irs-outlines-steps-to-speed-refunds-during-pandemic

What does "Pending" mean?

Pending simply means that your e-filed return is on its way and that the government hasn't accepted or rejected it yet.

If you e-filed your return in January, it'll stay in Pending status until the IRS starts processing the backlog of returns.

After January, e-filed returns generally sit in Pending status for 24–48 hours before coming back as either Accepted or Rejected. Sometimes state returns stay in Pending for several days or even longer.

Keep calm and check back

Until your state or the IRS processes your return,  you may hear there's "no record found." That actually means the return's still being processed. Just check back in a few days.
