Question

How can I claim my girlfriend's, my dependent, 1098-T? TurboTax seems to think it's mine but it's not. Help.

You have to enter your girlfriend as your dependent first before entering her Form 1098-T.

To add her as a dependent, click here: Add a dependent

In order to add her Form 1098-T, go through the following steps.  The program will initially ask you for your information, but later it will show both of you and her at one point.  You would select her to continue.

  • Sign in to your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • At the right upper corner, in the search box, type in "1098t" and Enter
  • Select Jump to 1098t
  • On the screen, Now Let's gather XYZ ( you) Additional Education Expenses
  • Follow prompts
  • Next screen, Your Education Expenses Summary, it should list both you and your girlfriend.  Select Edit under your girlfriend to continue.
  • Next screen Here's Your Education Summary ( girlfriend), under Tuition, select Edit to enter tuition information
  • See the images below.

If I do it the first time around , it assumes "I" am the student. If I go back, I'm given the choice to ADD STUDENT but it doesn't allow me to select my girlfriend. It just starts the whole thing again. I've logged out and in again. I've even started a new account to try it again and the same happens.
