When you file jointly the taxes paid and the refund are added together, for the married filing jointly numbers.

TurboTax has a tool called TaxCaster to give you an idea of your tax liability and/or refund. You can vary different items and see how that could impact your return. You can try it as married filing jointly and also as each married filing separately.  Click for TaxCaster.

You can also each mock up a married filing separately return in TurboTax to see what would have been your refund if you had filed that way. Generally, you get a better refund if you file jointly but if you mock up returns it could give you a relative idea of the proportion of the tax liability and payments.

This could be helpful if you feel one or both of you should check your W-4 withholding. You can file a new one at any time with your employer and TurboTax has a tool to help calculate the best withholding. Click for TurboTax Withholding Calculator.
