Question

How can you file on your income tax if you were incarcerated most of the year? I’ve heard that you still are allowed to get a refund even though your hands were tied. Any info will help, God Bles

You get a tax refund if you had more tax withheld than you owed to the government.  If you earned income from an employer and will receive a W-2 in January then file a tax return to seek a refund of excess tax withheld from your paychecks.  Or if you worked as an independent contractor for cash or if you receive a 1099Misc, you need to file a tax return if you made at least $400.  If you were self-employed you are required to pay self-employment tax for Social Security and Medicare--so it is possible that you could owe tax due instead of getting a refund.  We need more information in order to answer you about your prospects for a tax refund.
