How come I received my state taxes before my federal taxes?

The refunds are processed separately by different agencies and the timing is independent of each other. The IRS processes federal refunds and your state Department of Revenue processes the state tax return refunds. 

It is not unusual that one arrives before the other.  Where’s My Refund? has the most up to date information available about your federal income tax refund. The tool is updated daily (usually overnight) so you will just usually need to check once a day.
