I am an american who graduated from a canadian school last year and am trying to earn the lifetime learning credit, which I cannot do without attached this form to my amended return. I can't find anywhere in turbotax to be able to do this.

To qualify for he credit, your school should be considered An eligible educational institution.

An eligible educational institution is a school offering higher education beyond high school. It is any college, university, trade school, or other post secondary educational institution eligible to participate in a student aid program run by the U.S. Department of Education.

You can use this IRS link to check if your University is an eligible educational institution.

You need to amend your return to make the changes. Wait until your return has been accepted then amend your return.

To claim the education credit:

  1. Select Federal from the left menu.
  2. Go to Deductions and Credits.
  3. Scroll down to Education.
  4. Click start next to Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098-T)
  5. Answer the questions and continue. You will enter that the school did not issue a 1098-T.
  6. Enter the details from your Canadian tax document in the 1098-T section of TurboTax.  You need to convert the expenses to US dollars. Select Foreign address on the screen Where did you go to school in 2022?

Who is eligible for the Lifetime Learning Credit?
