You cannot change banking information while your return is in pending, nor can you change it after the return is accepted. The IRS does not allow it.

I was trying to change it before I filed. My problem was that during the filing process the first screen I was presented with asked for my payment method and also showed me the direct deposit bank account from last year. It then asked me to confirm the data. It took me a while to hit confirm when I was seeing the wrong bank account, but eventually I did and right there on the next screen I was able to change it.
