How do I change my phone number on a filed return?

My son just received a text message from TurboTax that his phone number on his filed return is not correct. After checking, it is and extremely old number which was discontinued several years ago but was brought forward in the interim and was not caught until now.

How would I correct that phone number to the IRS?

You really do not need to update that phone number or file an amendment.

The IRS will NEVER contact you by phone. They will always use the US Mail Service. If he does have to call in, they will verify his identity using his social, address and other miscellaneous information.

However, if you would like to update that phone number, you can call the IRS directly at 1-800-829-1040.
