How do I determine what to look for when the irs has decided to audit my return?

Did you receive correspondence from the IRS advising you that your return was being examined? If so, there should be a contact number on the notice you received. I recommend calling that number for more precise information.

 

In the meantime, here is the link for the TurboTax audit support center. Even if you didn't purchase Audit Defense, this may help.
