It is the generic Status code 152... but it does not expound on what the problem is

Yeah, if you're referring to Tax Topic 152, then like you said, that's just a general reference that many get when there's a delay.   The only way to find out more info is to either phone the IRS customer service, or if you have one, you can try to find any info in your IRS account/transcript as I mentioned above.

These are the phone steps from last year.  I haven't had to call this year, so I don't know if there are any changes.

IRS:  800-829-1040 (7AM-7 PM local time) Monday-Friday

When calling the IRS do not choose any offered choice for "Refund", or it will likely send you to an automated phone line.

  • First choose your language.   Then listen to each menu before making the selection.
  • When prompted, press 2 for "personal income tax".
  • Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
  • Then press 3 "for all other questions."
  • Then press 2 "for all other questions."
  • It may then ask for your SSN, but do not enter it.  Just wait.   If it asks for SSN a second time, still do not enter it.
  • Then it will get "tired", and you'll get another menu.  Choose 2 for "personal".
  • Then in the next menu choose 4 for "all other inquiries", and it should transfer you to an agent but expect a wait.
  • I usually use a speakerphone so I can work on something else while waiting.

But you didn't say what you see at the IRS WMR tool.   Your refund would still be at the IRS if it hasn't been approved and sent.     Does the IRS WMR tool say received and still being processed?  Or something else?

If the tool says it's still being processed, you can phone the IRS if you wish to see if they can explain what is causing the delay.   They may be able to tell you if it's under review and if they are in the process of sending a letter, etc.

 ADDENDUM

Also, if you have an IRS account, you could look there under the Notices/Letters tab to see if one has been issued, but I don't know if they show up there in every case or how soon after one is issued.  Another option in that account:  you can look at your tax account transcript and see if there are any 3-digit IRS transaction codes that might tell the status of what is going on.  That can sometimes give a clue.
