Call his employer to request a copy.

He hasn’t been employed for several years, he has been taking money each year from an IRA type account. I’m unsure on how to make sure he filed for 2018 also.

If he has been taking money from an IRA type of account, the document you are seeking is a Form 1099-R.  You would need to know the name of the financial institution in order to request a replacement copy of the form.  Hopefully you will be able to find the information you need as you go through his financial records.  My condolences for your loss.

Alternatively, you can request a Wage and Income Transcript from the IRS to get copies of forms that were supplied to the IRS.  You can also request a Tax Return Transcript for 2018 to determine if taxes were filed for 2018.
