Once you submit your tax return, it will stay in pending until the IRS either "Accepts" or "Rejects" your return. This is the first step. Then the IRS will start processing your return. If there are any issues, usually they will post information on the Where’s My Federal Refund? site or you will receive a letter in the mail.

Overall, you can check to see if your return was filed by checking your e-file status. If no status is showing then the return was not completed and submitted.

If you don't see a status, go through the TurboTax File section again. Be sure to go all the way to the end and select Transmit my returns now.

When you e-file your federal return you will receive two emails from TurboTax. The first one will say that your return was submitted.  The second email will tell you if your federal return was accepted or rejected.  If you e-filed a state return, there will be a third email to tell you if the state accepted or rejected your state return.

If your return does show a status, then once "Accepted" (What does Accepted mean?within 24 hours you can start tracking your refund on the IRS  Where’s My Federal Refund? site.
