How long does amending taxes take? Do I get penalized if it does not get processed on time by mail or e-filed?

The post mark or submission date will be the official date the return is received.

 

You can use the IRS website Check your amended return

It may take about three weeks to start processing

 

You will need

  • Social Security number
  • Date of birth
  • Zip code

Do not expect quick results from amending. It can take four months or more for the IRS to process an amended return.
