Question

How should I find my 2016 California tax returns? I upgraded to PLUS but it still won't let me access them.

Have you located the 2016 return when you look in the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents" and choose tax year 2016, but access is locked until you pay?    Or do you find no evidence of it at all?   If you see no evidence of it at all in that account, we can tell you how to look for multiple accounts.

The rest of this posting assumes you have found it but need to know how to pay for PLUS to unlock it.

Are your upgraded 2018 return and the 2016 return in the same account?    And have you actually paid the 19.99 for 2018 PLUS by credit/debit card?  It is the paying that unlocks all prior returns in that account.    Do NOT pay if you see no evidence of the 2016 return in that account.

If you haven't yet paid, here's how:

  • Open your 2018 return, if not already open.
  • Once open, then go to the left menu column and click on TAX TOOLS, then PRINT CENTER.
  • At the Print Center choose to "Print, save, view THIS  YEAR's return."   (Yes, you say "this year's" because you are paying for the 2018 return to unlock the 2016 return.)   You don't actually have to print it.
  • It will ask you to pay.  If the Order Summary appears OK, then choose PAY NOW.
  • You can pay by credit card or debit card (even though it only says "credit.")

NOTE:  If it should offer you the choice of paying later out of the Federal refund, that cannot be done for this purpose.  You have to choose PAY NOW.
