Question

How to get all W2s and all information relating to taxes to file for this year and several years prior without having any of the required documents in hand? CPA time?

Currently looking at 3 years without filing, married couple, minimal deductions from education, not in possession of W2s. That's where my wife and I are trying to start, getting all of the documentation.

To complete and file a tax return you need the W-2 forms and any other forms 1099 that report income you earned plus any unearned income (interest, dividends, capital gains).  Forms 1099 can only be obtained from the issuer of the form.

Contact your employer(s) and see if you can get copies of the W-2 for the years in question.

For a fee you can get a complete copy of a W-2 from the Social Security Administration - https://faq.ssa.gov/en-us/Topic/article/KA-02501

You can get a free Wage and Income transcript from the IRS - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

(Does not include state income or state income tax withheld)
