I had my taxes filed at Jackson Hewitt and went to check to see if they quoted me a correct amount by using turbotax and accidently filed twice

One of the returns will be rejected, if your return from Jackson Hewitt has already been accepted then the one you filed with TurboTax will be rejected.  Two returns with the same SSN cannot go through the system.

I have the exact same scenario as @ellalwalsh27 :

I e-filed my federal taxes via credit karma and they were accepted. I want to file my state returns (i have two) but every site says I have to file my federal with them. I was wondering, could I efile my federal and state returns via Turbotax and the federal just get rejected but my state go through since I already have my federal filed? Or do I have to print out my state returns and mail them at this point?

What did you end up doing? With everything closed due to Covid, states are strongly encouraging e-filing. Even if I were to mail a paper return, I'd want to use certified mail w/return receipt, which is a huge hassle to send from home.

    No.

If you end up using TurboTax for your remaining state return, you will need to mail it in.  You can only e-file your state return in TurboTax if you used the same file to E-file your federal return.

did the IRS take higher refund? I filed with one tax provider yesterday and wanted to see if I would get the same amount and got a much higher amount with the second tax preparation place.

The IRS will only accept 1 return.  You have to wait until the IRS opens on Feb 12 to see which one gets accepted first.  The other one will reject.

Which one did you do first ?

I did the same thing by accident.

I have a similar scenario but, with an added bonus.

I originally started with TurboTax and had everything filled out and it was giving issues filing for me. I switched to HR block and submitted it that way. However; I accidentally left out a tax payment credit which would have bumped up my TR. I saw that I had to wait for it to come back and amend it. But; I went to double check TT and accidentally submitted it because it had the proper documents and refund. Which one will be rejected? And if it’s TT will The irs fix my error since I forgot the Tax credit? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Ok ... not sure how you can "accidentally" complete 5 screens in step 3 of the FILE tab to efile a return  BUT  if you managed to do so then you will have to wait and see which return is accepted first.   Since the IRS doesn't pull returns in the order they were put into the "holding pool" nor do they drain the pools from different companies in any set order no one can tell you which will be accepted.

If the wrong one is accepted then you will have to WAIT and see if the IRS catches your error when processing the return.  If they don't then and only then should you amend the return.

Lack of sleep and being half awake I got an email from TT saying to complete it. I went on and did so and then realized that I filed but had two amounts.

but, thank you for your response I’ll wait to see which one is accepted or not.

If my TurboTax efile was accepted does that mean the other one I accidentally filed would be rejected and how would I know if they rejected it or not

Correct the IRS system won’t accept two returns with the same social so if your rifle is accepted by the irs you should get a notification that the other one has been rejected

Ya i need a bit of info also. I filed with turbo tax and accidentally sent my info through but couldnt complete my state. I took my info to hnr block and told them the situation the rep filed federal and state. My federal was instantly rejected a day later my turbo tax federal was accepted it has been a week and i cant locate my refund via "wheres my refund" any help ?

I filed mine with turbo tax first and it was rejected and then I filed with Jackson Hewitt no news on that yet so what do I do ?

I filed my taxes with TaxSlayer the end of January. TurboTax kept sending me emails to sign in to finish my taxes so that's what I did. But I believe now I have filed two times what do I do?

You can not file 2 times.  Usually the second one submitted will reject. Nothing to worry about.

You can check your Turbo Tax efile status here.  Hopefully it says rejected.  If it was Accepted then your first return did not go though.

That should not happen.  If one return was accepted the next one will reject.

    March 26, 2021

Okay I filed twice, stupid but I missed a credit and it was a significant change to my return. I filed on the same day and the correct one was accepted. My taxslayer was accepted and my turbotax was rejected. It has been 2 weeks and it has not moved to the approved tab on the status bar.

My question is, because I filed twice with the same social.... even though one was rejected. Will they IRS flag this as identity theft or do I need to report that in order for them to not process the return - I do not want this, obviously it wasn't identity theft, but will they push it to that department automatically so that my return will not be approved until they investigate?

Or will the return that was accepted, be pushed through? Usually, my return gets approved quick so I am concerned that they flagged it and won't approve it within the 21 days but rather I will have to go through the identity verification or whatever that process is. I have read a lot of different things, one being that the return that was rejected, will not get sent at all to the IRS, and the accepted one will be okay. But I also read alot about identity theft and I am wondering if they flagged me automatically bc the same social. Any help is appreciated.

    Thanks, Julie

You did NOT file twice ... the second filing was REJECTED so it was never filed and there is nothing to "flag" ... some returns are simply taking longer to process this year and your situation is common.   Just be patient.
