I Accidentally filed Single when I should have filed Head of Household. Will this change my refund amount? Should I amend my return??

The answer depends on the facts and your circumstances.

First, note that the Standard Deduction for

  • filing Head of Household is $9,300
  • filing single is only $6,300.

This would reduce your taxable income by $3,000.

In addition, the tax tables provide generally better tax brackets for someone filing Head of Household than for someone filing Single.

However, the amount of difference in your refund - if any - depends on your particular circumstances. You will have to run the test for yourself.
