You have to wait until the IRS either accepts or rejects your return.

If the IRS rejects your return, you can adjust the stimulus amount and then re-submit your return.

To make the changes:

  • Log in to your account.
  • Go to Federal Review and click Continue.

If the IRS accepts your return, you need to amend to make any changes. Wait until you receive your refund before amending your return.

To amend your 2020 return:

1.Log in to your account.

2.Scroll down to Your tax return & documents (you may need to select Show),

select 2020 and then Amend (change) return.

3.Select Amend using TurboTax Online.

4 Follow the instructions. Don't worry if your refund changes to $0. This is normal on amended returns.

5.You can e-file your 2020 amended federal tax return, but most states require amendments to be printed and filed by mail.

Given that the IRS has a record of how much stimulus was paid out to each taxpayer, it is likely that it could be reconciled without you having to do anything.

I accidentally put my stimulus check I received in Jan of 2021 for $600 on my tax return for 2020. What should I do?

You do not have to do anything.  You correctly reported the stimulus payment received in 2021 on the 2020 federal tax return as required.
