Question

I am unable to download my 2016 tax return. It returns with OOps! Not what you're looking for?

Are you wanting to download for your records, or to print to file by mail?
If you have already efiled, has it been accepted?  How long has it been since you filed?
On what screen and what link are you trying to download when you get that error?

My taxes got rejected because someone used my daughters social and I was told I needed to print my documents and mail to IRS

I will tell you below how to open your return back up to change the filing method, and it should prompt you to print the documents as you go through the process.   It should also print the Filing Instructions.   Be sure you sign and date the return before mailing.  I like to mail with tracking such as Priority Mail or certified return receipt, so I know that the IRS received it and have proof of mailing.

I'll also leave an alternate way to print there, just in case.

A rejected return is considered to not have been filed.  So here's how to reopen an unfiled return to change the filing method since you plan to file by mail but are getting an error when trying to print from your account.

  • Log in and go to your 2016 Tax Timeline.
  • Since TurboTax thinks you are finished, there will be no orange "Take me to my return" button.
  • So in that case, scroll down to "Some things you can do."
  • Choose "Add a State."  (you don't really add one; that's just to get the return to open up.)
  • Once the return is open, go through the REVIEW tab to be sure all is still in order.
  • Then go to through the FILE tab and change the filing method to "file by mail."
  • It should then offer you the opportunity to print the return and Filing Instructions.
  • Be sure to sign and date the return before mailing.

If you have any problem printing by that method, then here's an alternate approach:

  • While the return is still open, click at the top on MY ACCOUNT, then choose PRINT CENTER.
  • Then choose "Print/save/view this year's return."
  • It will probably offer you a basic PDF and one with "all forms and worksheets."   See if you can print from one of those.
