Question

I am waiting on a 1099 K1 from an estate dispersal but it might not be ready till august. Do I file an extension or file my taxes and the file an amended return?

We will not owe taxes from the dispersal

You can file your tax return now and amend if needed when you receive the K-1.  If you will not owe taxes you should have no issues, often the estate will pay any taxes before it makes the final distributions.

Options are :

1) file extension and wait for the K-1 form

2) file without the form and amend later

Yep, those are my options. Same as I wrote. But which is the better option if either is?

You should file your taxes now.

If something in the dispersal changes when you receive the K-1, you can amend your taxes. Many K-1s from estates are received later in the year.
