Question

I can't find my 1099G for my state refund (Virginia) for 2021. The online VA tax look up only goes up to 2020. Does anyone know where I can find a copy for 2021?

If you know last year's refund amount, you don't need a 1099-G. Follow these steps to enter last year’s refund amount:

  1. Sign in to your account and open the Wages & Income section of your return
  2. On the Your income screen, select Add more income
  3. Look for the Other Common Income section and select Show more
  4. Select Start on the Refunds Received for State/Local Tax Returns section
  5. Enter your refund amount

If all three of the following are true, your refund counts as taxable income:

  • You itemized deductions last year, instead of taking the standard deduction
  • You claimed state and local income taxes (not general sales taxes)
  • Claiming the deduction helped you increase your federal refund or lower your tax bill
