Question

I click the button to change my return to itemized deductions and it does not change my return to itemized deductions.

The software tells me that I would save money on fed taxes if I itemize, so I click the change my deduction type, it does not change my tax due, and when finalizing my return it asks me to review fields that are only relevant to someone using the standard deduction.

This is all correct. If your standard deduction and itemized deductions are within $300 of each other, the program is correctly calculating that the standard deduction is better since you can add up to $300 of charity. Which is then more than your itemized deduction.

 

The program is also correct that the itemized deduction is better than the standard deduction. That would be the choice, if you did not have the charity -  a separate entity from the standard deduction.
