You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed.  It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return.  If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your income and re-submit your return.

If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and mail it in. You will be needing to use a form called a 1040X, which becomes available in mid-February. You cannot e-file an amended return.  They have to be mailed, and it takes at least 2-3 months for the IRS to process an amended return.  Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself.  Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed

@jim_chrissy08 - Please cite the Federal Tax Law (IRC) that supports your opinion.  (I think you will find that the law is just the opposite.)

@jim_chrissy08 - Great!  I'm going to file my taxes from now on before I get my W-2s, 1099s, etc. and I won't ever owe any federal taxes.  Not!

That's exactly what I said before someone changed his answer to a comment and lost all the followup comments.

I received 1099-r from my retirement in the army also. Don't worry its not a big real and it doesn't take 2h3 months for the IRS to fix an amended return. Last year after I got my return which you will. The IRS wont reject your return based off a missing 1099-r that they have no knowledge of but after you get your return back then go into your turbotax account and click file an amended return. All you do is upload the 1099-r just like you did your w-2 and print it out. The request for amended return prints with it and seal it all in envelope and mail it back in. 4-8 weeks they will send you a bill to pay the tax on your 1099-r or if on your 1099-r block 4 there was a federal income tax withheld then you will get a check for the reimbursement of the portion of that you are owed. Mine was blank so I had to pay a small amount like $35 into taxes but had already received my return so I had the money. It took about 6 weeks from start to end.

I did something similar last year. Two weeks after I filed I got some new info, so I just filed an amended return for both Federal and State. It seemed to work out ok for me. If it does not work for you than you will have to wait for the return to be processed by the IRS and then file the amended return.

You should always wait until the first return has been processed before amending.  If the IRS catches any error or denies  a credit that changes the amount of the refund, then you would probably have to amend the amended return which is not easy - best to wait.

If you wait until next year to report it, there will be penalties and interest that will accrue. You will want to take care of it now to avoid a financial burden later.

Before you can amend your 2024 return, you will need to wait until it is accepted by the IRS before you begin amending. Once accepted, here is how to amend your 2024 return, First though, log into your account and you will find this on the bottom of your page.
