I didn't add my second stimulus check to the 2020 taxes I just filed?

I think it changed how much I have to pay, what should I do now?

If you have already filed your return you will need to wait and see if your return gets accepted or rejected.

  • If your return will be rejected by the IRS, then all you have to do is make the changes on your return and refile.
  • If your return gets accepted you will have to  amend your return and pay the additional amount to the IRS. But you might want to wait until your return is processed.  Please see  FAQ How to amend a tax return for instructions.

It was accepted on 2/12/21.

I read somewhere that I should wait for my state refund and pay my federal tax due now, and not do the amendment until after all that has happened.

But it also says I can file an amendment online, I don't believe the form I need will be ready until 2/26.  Can I wait and pay the total correct amount due after I've filed the amendment?  or should I let the initial filing process in full and then sort of start over and pay the balance due with the amendment?

Yes, as long as you pay you balance due by the due date of the return (April 15) you are good.

Yes, it is best to wait until the original return has processed before filing an amended return (1040X).  Please be aware that you can e-file your 2020 amended federal tax return, but most states require amendments to be printed and filed by mail.
