Did you have any TurboTax fees that you chose to pay out of the Federal refund?   That payment method also has an additional $40 service fee ($45 for California filers) plus possible sales tax.

You appear to be using Live Self-Employed, which is $170 for a Federal return and $50 for a state return, plus the service fee mentioned above if you paid out of your Federal refund.

Also if you are expecting both Federal and state refunds, be sure which one you received.  And don't go by a total amount.  They come in separate deposits.

Log into the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool, and see if there are any messages there about a reduction in your refund.   There may or may not be.   If there was an offset, it might say.

https://www.irs.gov/Refunds

If the IRS reduced your refund, you should get a letter from them in about 3 weeks explaining why, or you can phone them.  We can tell you how to reach a live IRS agent.

Check the IRS WMR tool to see if it mentions anything about an offset.

https://www.irs.gov/Refunds

Otherwise, if the IRS lowered your refund, they'll send you a letter in about 3 weeks or so explaining why.

Also see this FAQ on why a received refund can be lower than what was submitted on your Federal return.

If you want to phone the IRS, here's to reach a live IRS agent:

800-829-1040 (7AM-7 PM local time) Monday-Friday

When calling the IRS do not choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.

  • First choose your language.  Then listen to each menu before making the selection.
  • Then press 2 for "personal income tax".
  • Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
  • Then press 3 "for all other questions."
  • Then press 2 "for all other questions."
  • It may then ask for your SSN, but do not enter it.  Just wait.    If it asks for SSN a second time, still do not enter it.
  • Then it will get "tired", and you'll get another menu.  Choose 2 for "personal" then you should be transferred to an agent, but there's likely to be a long wait.
  • I usually use a speakerphone so I can work on something else while waiting.
