Question

I do not have access to my 2022 version of Turbo Tax and I need to open my 2022 tax return to read it. How do I open it to read it?

I never saved my file as a PDF. It is still in the original TurboTax file format.

You need the program in order to be able to open the file.

To access your prior year online tax returns sign onto the TurboTax website with the User ID you used to create the account - https://myturbotax.intuit.com/

Start the 2023 online tax return by entering some personal information then click on Tax Home on the left side of the screen.

On the Tax Home webpage -

Scroll down to the section Your tax returns & documents.  Click on the Year and Click on Download/print return (PDF)

If you used the desktop CD/Download editions installed on your computer, the only copy of your tax data file and any PDF's will be on the computer where the return was created.  TurboTax does not store online any returns completed using the desktop editions.

Or go to this IRS website for free federal tax return transcripts - https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

For a fee of $30 you can get a complete federal tax return from the IRS by completing Form 4506 - http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf

The only way to open a TurboTax tax return file is with the TurboTax software for the appropriate year.

If you purchased your 2022 software as a download from TurboTax.com you can download it again and reinstall it.

If you cannot install the software you could try TaxPrinter. You send them your .tax file and they send you back a PDF of the tax return. TaxPrinter has no connection with TurboTax. I have never used TaxPrinter, so I cannot make a recommendation. I'm just making you aware of it.

In the future, always save a PDF of your tax return after you file it.
