Question

I e-filed 1040 through Turbotax, but when trying to e-file its amended return TurboTax said I didn't file 1040 through it

I e-filed 1040 through TurboTax, then I realized I need to file an amended return.

I'm using the Mac version and started the amended return by:

1. File -> New Tax Return

2. In the "Welcome to TurboTax" page select "amend a return (make changes) after it was filed and accepted by IRS"

3. follow the instructions on "We'll help you change (amend) your return"

4. after making the changes and ready to file the return it told me I didn't file 1040 through TurboTax

5. then I open the filed return in another tab, and check the e-file status, and it shows the return has been accepted by IRS.

Any idea how to get around this?

Thanks!

You are incorrect at step 1.

To amend first make a copy of your filed tax return or TurboTax will overwrite it.

To amend, open the return that you filed and got ACCEPTED. then you will not get the message that the return was not filed.

Thanks for the response.

But if I open my accepted return, and made changes on it, then at the time of filing TurboTax told me "The following returns have been submitted: - Federal Return"

After opening the accepted return how to tell TurboTax that I'm going to file an amendment?

Start TurboTax and select File.Open...

the list of filea presented should include yours and have an AMEND button on it.
