If you already E-Filed it, you would have to wait and see if your return was accepted or rejected.

If the IRS rejects your E-Filed income tax return, you could change the stimulus amount.

If the IRS accepts your E-Filed income tax return and your stimulus amount is wrong, you'll have to see if the IRS catches the error.

  • If they catch it, they'll send you an explanation letter stating that your refund or amount due is different and the changes they made.
  • If they don't catch it, you'll need to amend your income tax return. Note: You won't be able to amend a 2020 income tax return until the IRS informs us that they are accepting amended returns.

I believe I entered the wrong amount on the stimulus page because my 1040 doesn't show the credit. How can I get back to the page to correct it? I have not filed the return yet.

The stimulus questions are asked in the Federal Review section of the TurboTax program.  Any payment you were eligible to receive based on the 2020 Federal tax return but did not receive will be entered on the Federal tax return, Form 1040 Line 30 as a tax credit.  The credit is included in the federal tax refund or it will reduce the amount of federal taxes owed.
