Question

I filed for direct deposit but I received a paper check. I cant cash it because I am abroad. What can I do?

You will have to problem solve this one in whatever country you are in.  The IRS will not make a direct deposit to a foreign bank.  The only form of payment the IRS will issue for a refund going to a foreign country is a paper check.  So see if you can open a bank account in your country by depositing the check and waiting for it to clear.

Requesting a direct deposit is just that a request ... the IRS doesn't have to honor it.  Now that they sent a check there is no way to change it ... you will need to find a way to negotiate the transaction.   Does your US bank allow mobile depositing ?
