Question

I filed my 2019 taxes, but never received my check. Can they give it to me in 2022?

you need to contact the IRS to find out what happened.

Are you referring to a Federal return for 2019?  Is there more to the story?  Have you tried to check on it previously?

You said "never received my check".  Did you choose to receive your refund by paper check in the mail?  Or did a direct deposit fail and was sent back to the IRS?

Did you use Online TurboTax to file the 2019 return?  If so, did you efile it, or did you print and mail a paper return in postal mail?

If you efiled, check to be sure the return was efiled successfully and accepted.  To do that, log into your Online account, and at the Tax Home scroll down to the section "Your Tax Returns & Documents."  Expand that section and choose tax year 2019.  What does it show for the 2019 return--does it say accepted, rejected, printed, started, ready to mail, or what?

If you end up phoning the IRS, be aware they are not easy to reach.   I have found that for me it was best to call just before closing time--about 6:50-6:55 PM and quickly go through the steps below.  I figured a lot of folks would not call that close to closing, and that if I was one of the last to get into the queue, they would finish off all the people who were in the queue at closing time.   I got in, but still had to wait quite a while.

IRS:  800-829-1040 (7AM-7 PM local time) Monday-Friday

When calling the IRS do not choose the first choice re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.

  • First choose your language.  Then listen to each menu before making the selection.
  • Then press 2 for "personal income tax".
  • Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
  • Then press 3 "for all other questions."
  • Then press 2 "for all other questions."
  • It may then ask for your SSN, but do not enter it.  Just wait.    If it asks for SSN a second time, still do not enter it.
  • Then it will get "tired", and you'll get another menu.  Choose 2 for "personal".
  • Then in the next menu choose 4 for "all other inquiries", and it should transfer you to an agent but expect a long wait.
  • I usually use a speakerphone so I can work on something else while waiting.

Try checking your account online at https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript ... see what happened to the 2019 return ... was it processed ?   Was a refund issued ?   Only then will you know what your plan of attack should be.
