Question

I filed my 2020 taxes as marry filing jointly, don't qualify for stimulus. file separate my spouse does qualify, can I get the stimulus money still if I amend to MFS

Want to know if amending will be a waste of time because government already bucketed me based on Married filing jointly and didn't qualify for stimulus.  I know my spouse qualifies on her own and the amount of money we'd get outweighs the tax consequences of changing married joint to married separate.

Yes. If you amend your tax return to Married Filing Separately and your wife files a tax return as Married filing Separately, she will be eligible for the stimulus if her income is below the threshold of $75,000. She will be eligible for a reduced stimulus for income between $75,000 and $80,000.
