I filed taxes for 2016. I paid 8,800.00. There was an error where I didn't file about 8,000 in expenses. The amended return now says I am owed a refund. What happens next

I filed a 2016 return and had to pay 8,800. So I paid it last year. But then I found out that I could claim flight and hotel expenses. Silly that I didn't know but it is what it is. Anyway, I filled out an amended 2016 return but I didn't send it in yet. The return shows I am owed 1,100.00. I didn't see anywhere to put in that I paid 8,800 taxes in 2016. Do they figure that out or do I put it somewhere? My State return didn't change. Any advice?

You must mail your amended tax return to the IRS.  They will review the return with the changes and you will receive a refund check for the $1100.  Just curious- which state did you file?  It is odd that your federal but not state would change.

Ok but when I started the amended return it said -8,800. When I was done, it said 1,100.00 refund. I didn't enter anywhere that I paid the 8,800. Does that mean that I owed 7,700 and I overpaid 1,100 or does it mean I would have gotten a refund of 1,100 and I shouldn't have paid 8,800 which means I am owed 9,900?
