If you did not include your Form 1099-G related to unemployment benefits with your efiled return and your efiled return was already accepted by the IRS, then you will need to file an amended tax return to include this information. (If the return was rejected, then you can include this additional information and re-submit (no amended return would be necessary in this instance)).

Amended returns must be printed and mailed, and take up to 12 weeks to process.

I started my taxes over on the pc and totally forgot my 1099 G. I can't believe I did that. My federal was accepted, will I ammend my state with the 1099 G? And will I still get the earned income credit money after amending in the future or is it lost forever?

Two common reasons to receive a form 1099G are for state tax refunds or unemployment benefits.

If you received the 1099G to report unemployment benefits received, you will need to amend your return to include that income.  However you need to wait for your original return to process. Likely, the IRS will catch missing income that has been reported by other sources (1099G) and will send you a letter outlining the discrepancy with instructions on how to respond.  If not, you can amend your return once your refund has been deposited for your original return.

Since unemployment benefits are not earned income they will not qualify you for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).  However, if due to receiving unemployment you are able to use the lookback to tax year 2019 to raise your EITC then that option will be available as part of the amendment.

If the 1099G is for a state tax refund, then likely you will not need to do anything.  If you used the standard deduction for the year of the tax refund, it will not be taxable; no need to amend. If you itemized for the year of the refund, you may need to amend to include more taxable income.  If the amendment doesn't change your tax or refund then you don't need to file it.

I feel like TurboTax did this purposely now that I’m looking at how often it’s happening. I selected I have a 1099 for and the response was “we’ll get to that later” I filled out numerous pages and still never got to the 1099 form. I figured maybe the option would pop up to file separately at the end, but it never did. Now you’re saying we have to amend it and wait possibly 12 weeks for processing. That’s misleading and unfair.

@Dmariebrad

There are opportunities to review your information prior to filing, however, if a form was missed, you will have to complete the Amendment process if your return has been Accepted and not Rejected.  If you need to correct a form after you filed it, please see this Help Article for instructions on how to do this. Please note, the 2021 Amendment 1040-X form may not be available yet.  It will show up on the Help Article with a link once it is ready to use.

@Nick s92  Each tax situation is different, and only the IRS knows if they would keep your return or not. You can, however, amend your return to include your 1099g once your return is processed but wait until you receive your return before you amend.  For information on how to amend your return please visit the link below.
