Question

I forgot to include medical expenses paid by bank account and not related to HSA. Should I make an amendment or I already take maximum deduction?

I paid $2,048.53 in 2020 for medical surgery that are not related to HSA. Should be considered deductible or I achieved the maximum of deduction in my tax returns?

Are these "medical expenses" qualified medical expenses as described in IRS Publication 502?

If so, if the expenses were incurred AFTER you created your HSA, then at any time, you can ask to be reimbursed for those expenses by contacting the HSA custodian and asking for a distribution for that amount. If you don't have the $2k yet, wait until you do - there is no time limit on when you have to do this.

Make sure to document this and save it in your tax files.

In this way, you in essence pay for the surgery with tax-advantage dollars - and you don't have to amend your return.

Do this make sense?
