Question

I get military retirement which should not be taxed in Alabama. I cannot get the Alabama state to stop telling me owe $971 when I shouldn't. How do I fix this?

First, be sure in the "My Info" section you have indicated that you are former military.  Next revisit the AL state interview.

Continue through the residency, filing status, and employment  questions and you will arrive at a page titled "About your retirement distributions".  You should see your 1099R entry there.  You must "Edit" that line and select "Yes" as "military retirement" is listed as excludable income for AL.
