I paid for and installed 2017, it ran an update when I opened it, but it still thinks that I'm trying to file for 2017 instead of 2018. Is there a way to use this program to file my return for 2018?

No, you cannot use the 2017 version to file your 2018 taxes, unfortunately. With the new tax reform TCJA, there are many changes have made to our previous tax law, by using the 2017 edition will not prepare a correct 2018 tax return.
