Question

I incorrectly entered a number from my w2 on my tax return

When I was entering my information from my w2 income tax withholdings I accidentally typed $5236 when it was actually $3236. Everything else is correct and I still qualify for my credits and deductions but this raised my refund almost $2000 from what it actually should be.

Because it's from a w2 and the IRS will have the correct amount to check against, will they automatically correct my mistake and just send me the correct refund? I can't tell if what I did is considered to be one of the math or clerical errors that the IRS says they'll fix without my needing for file an amended return.

If your W-2 is already in the IRS system they may catch and correct the clerical error for you and send you a letter.  If it is not, then once your refund is received amend the return as soon as possible and mail back the overpayment of the refund.  As long as the overpayment is returned before April 15, 2020 you will not pay any penalties or interest.

If you need to amend your return just log back into TurboTax.com or open the program on your computer and select the option "I need to amend my accepted tax return".  Update the withholding, print the return, and mail it back with payment.

Will I still receive a refund even though there's a mistake?

Sorry I didn't read your response properly.

Wouldn't it be better to go ahead and send in the amended return since I know where the error is? Or would that just confuse everything?

You should not try to amend your return until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund or your payment has cleared.  Amended returns do not “catch up” to your original returns and replace them.  They are processed as two separate returns.
