Question

I’m a J1-Intern for a year and I filed my tax return on TurboTax. After my application was accepted, I learned that non-residents cannot use Turbotax. What can I do?

You will need to amend the return you filed through TurboTax. If you are receiving a refund you need to wait until you have received the funds before you amend your return.

 

Because the Form 1040-NR is not supported in TurboTax you will not be able to use TurboTax to amend your return. You will need to use Sprintax to prepare a Form 1040NR return. If you have questions you can contact Sprintax Help for assistance. 

 

When you amend the return you will attach the Form 10410-NR to the Form 1040-X - Amended Return. You will need to prepare the Form 1040-X manually.
