I'm ready to file my tax return, but want to file with the state electronically for money back and just print out the federal return to mail in later (w payment). How?

Can I e-File one return and not the other?  I want to file my state return now electronically, but just print out the federal return to mail in with payment later.  How do I do that?

No.  You can not efile state unless Federal was efiled and accepted.  If you mail federal you have to mail state.  Even in New York.

 

You can file state before Federal but you have to mail state.
