Question

I’m trying to amend my state, not the federal for the unemployment tax break. I don’t want to mess with the federal because the IRS is taking care of that already.

Sign in to your TurboTax account.  Select the "Add a state" option.  This will allow you back in to your return without amending the Federal.

Go to the state interview and depending on the state you will need to either click through the interview to the end and find the "Amend" option or find the "other tax situations" section and the "Amend" option will be there.

The TurboTax updates have automatically excluded the unemployment income per the American Rescue Plan.  Therefore you will first need to re-include the income to get back to the original tax return filed.

  1. Cancel/delete any amendments you have started and delete any amendment forms in the forms view (1040X and state amendments forms ending in "X"
  2. Sign out of your TurboTax account
  3. Using the "Add a state" option
  4. Sign in to your TurboTax account
  5. Revisit the "Unemployment form 1099G" topic
  6. If the amount in box 1 of your 1099G is 10,200 or more add 10,200 to the box 1 amount (amount shown on your actual form) in order to eliminate the exclusion and get to the original taxable amount
  7. If the amount in box 1 of your 1099G is less than 10,200 then double it in box 1 in order to eliminate the exclusion and get to the original taxable amount
  8. Click "State"  to return to the state interview
  9. "Continue" the state
  10. Click through to near the end of the interview to find the "Amend your state" option
  11. Click "Yes"
  12. Put in the requested information from your original return
  13. Answer "Yes" that you have changes
  14. Follow the prompts to return to the "Unemployment" topic and subtract the 10,200 that you added in earlier to get back to the amount shown on your form 1099G (puts the exclusion back in place)
  15. Continue to follow the prompts to complete the state only amendment
